✈️ AFOQT Prep Books
The books I recommend to every student who walks in for AFOQT tutoring. No single book covers everything — use at least two. Amazon affiliate links (tag: fissionlab-20).
Trivium AFOQT Study Guide 2025–2026 Top Pick
Trivium Test Prep · 8th Edition
1,100+ practice questions covering all 12 subtests. The most current and comprehensive single-volume prep book available. Strong on Verbal, Quantitative, and Academic Aptitude composites.
Dr. Preston's note Best starting point for most candidates. The 8th edition has accurate question formats for the current test version. Use this as your primary reference from Week 1.
Barron's Military Flight Aptitude Tests Pilot Prep
Terry L. Duran · Barron's Test Prep
Six full-length practice tests covering AFOQT, SIFT, and ASTB-E. Outstanding for Pilot composite preparation — covers Instrument Comprehension and spatial subtests that most books skip.
Dr. Preston's note If you are going rated (pilot or navigator), this is non-negotiable. The spatial and aviation sections are the most underserved area in AFOQT prep. Barron's covers them properly.
AFOQT Study Guide — Moon Point Test Prep Budget Pick
AFOQT Study Guide Team
Solid all-around prep book at a lower price point. Good practice question variety across all subtests. Use as a secondary source to get more practice reps, especially for Verbal Analogies.
Dr. Preston's note Best used alongside Trivium or Barron's for additional practice volume. The answer explanations are clear and useful for diagnosing why you got a question wrong.
⚛ Physics Textbooks
The texts I reference most in tutoring sessions and research. From intro-level to graduate. Amazon affiliate links (tag: fissionlab-20).
Fundamentals of Physics Standard
Halliday, Resnick & Walker · 10th Edition
The gold standard intro physics textbook. Covers mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, and modern physics with rigorous but accessible explanations. Used in most university physics sequences.
Dr. Preston's note Start here if you are taking introductory calculus-based physics. The worked examples are clear and the problem sets build exactly the problem-solving instincts you need.
The Feynman Lectures on Physics Conceptual
Richard P. Feynman · 3 Volume Set
The most insightful physics writing in existence. Not a problem-solving textbook — a deep conceptual companion. Read alongside your primary text to build genuine understanding rather than formula recall.
Dr. Preston's note When a student tells me they "get the math but not the physics," this is what I assign. Feynman's explanation of electromagnetism alone is worth the price of the whole set.
Physics for Scientists & Engineers Problem Sets
Serway & Jewett · 10th Edition
Strong problem-solving emphasis. Better problem variety than Halliday/Resnick for engineering students. The two-volume set covers mechanics, thermal physics, electromagnetism, and modern physics comprehensively.
Dr. Preston's note My go-to recommendation for students in engineering physics sequences. The end-of-chapter problems scale well from straightforward to genuinely challenging.
🤖 AI Tools
AI tools I actually use as an educator, researcher, and solopreneur. Honest ratings, no fluff.
🤖 Claude (Anthropic) Top Pick
The best AI for technical writing, research synthesis, and complex reasoning tasks. Significantly better than GPT-4 for physics and math problem explanation. I use Claude daily for lesson prep and content.
Dr. Preston's note If you are studying a hard quantitative subject, Claude gives better step-by-step explanations than any other model I have tested. Start here.
✍️ ChatGPT (OpenAI) Essential
The one you already know. Excellent for brainstorming, drafting, and general Q&A. GPT-4o has strong code and image analysis capabilities. Use it alongside Claude rather than exclusively.
Dr. Preston's note I use ChatGPT for quick ideation and first drafts. For technical depth and accuracy, I verify with Claude. The two complement each other well.
🔍 Perplexity AI Research
Best AI for research with citations. Unlike ChatGPT, Perplexity cites sources so you can verify claims. Essential for any academic or technical research task where accuracy matters.
Dr. Preston's note The citation feature alone makes this worth using for students. Teaches you to read primary sources rather than just accepting AI output at face value.
🎤 ElevenLabs Audio
Best AI voice generation. Convert written study notes to audio for passive review. I use this to create audio summaries of dense physics content for students who learn better through listening.
Dr. Preston's note Particularly useful for spaced repetition of AFOQT vocabulary and physics definitions. Create audio cards and listen during commutes or workouts.
💌 Newsletter Tools
Tools for building and growing an email newsletter. From personal experience running mine.

🌍 Beehiiv — The Newsletter Platform I Use and Recommend

The best newsletter platform for creators who want to monetize and grow. Built-in referral program, ad network, paid subscriptions, and analytics in one clean dashboard. No transaction fees on paid subscriptions. I run FissionLab's email list on Beehiiv.

🌍 Beehiiv Top Pick
The newsletter platform built for growth. Native referral program, ad network access, subscriber segmentation, and no transaction fees on paid tiers. The cleanest writing experience of any newsletter platform.
Dr. Preston's note I moved to Beehiiv after evaluating Substack, ConvertKit, and Ghost. The built-in growth mechanics — particularly the referral program — are the most complete on the market.
📩 ConvertKit / Kit Email Automation
Best for automation-heavy email marketing. Visual automation builder, tag-based segmentation, and creator-first features. Better for complex sequences and list segmentation than Beehiiv.
Dr. Preston's note If you need advanced automation flows, ConvertKit is stronger than Beehiiv. If you want a simpler, growth-focused newsletter experience, go with Beehiiv.
📚 Study Tools
Free and paid tools that make a measurable difference in how efficiently you learn and retain material.
📄 Notion Top Pick
Best all-in-one workspace for students. Build a study dashboard, track practice scores, create a vocabulary database, and organize all 12 AFOQT subtests in one clean system.
Dr. Preston's note Every student I work with gets a Notion study template. The ones who actually use it consistently score higher — not because Notion is magic, but because tracking forces accountability.
📚 Anki Free
The gold standard for spaced repetition flashcards. Free, open-source, and battle-tested. Critical for AFOQT Word Knowledge and Verbal Analogies — 15 new vocabulary words per day compounds fast.
Dr. Preston's note Anki is the single highest-ROI study tool for vocabulary-heavy tests. It takes 20 minutes to set up and delivers measurable results within two weeks of consistent use.
√ Khan Academy Free
Best free math and science curriculum. Covers everything from basic arithmetic through calculus and physics. Use it to rebuild foundational weaknesses before drilling AFOQT Quantitative subtests.
Dr. Preston's note If your AFOQT Quantitative diagnostic reveals algebra or geometry gaps, start here. One to two weeks of Khan Academy review pays dividends on the actual test.
🔮 Wolfram Alpha Math
The most powerful computational knowledge engine available. Enter any math problem and get step-by-step solutions. Essential for physics students working through complex problems who need to verify their reasoning.
Dr. Preston's note I use Wolfram Alpha to check my own calculations when preparing tutoring problems. For students, it is most useful for understanding where a solution went wrong, not for skipping the work.
