All 12 AFOQT Subtests

Timing, question count, composite weights, and the single most important tip for each subtest.

1. Verbal Analogies
25 Q · 8 min
Affects: Verbal · Academic Aptitude
Practice the form "A is to B as C is to ___." Focus on relationship types: part-to-whole, cause-effect, synonym, function.
2. Arithmetic Reasoning
25 Q · 29 min
Affects: Quantitative · Academic Aptitude
Word problems testing applied math. Sketch the scenario, identify what's being solved, and watch unit conversions carefully.
3. Word Knowledge
25 Q · 5 min
Affects: Verbal · Academic Aptitude
12 seconds per question. Build vocabulary with GRE/military word lists. Recognize Latin/Greek roots for unknown words.
4. Math Knowledge
25 Q · 22 min
Affects: Quantitative · Academic Aptitude · Pilot · CSO
Algebra, geometry, and basic trig. This subtest hits the Pilot composite — prioritize it. Know your exponent rules cold.
5. Reading Comprehension
25 Q · 38 min
Affects: Verbal · Academic Aptitude
Read the questions first, then skim the passage for answers. The correct answer is always directly supported by the text.
6. Situational Judgment
50 Q · 35 min
Affects: Officer Leadership Composite
Think like an AF officer: chain of command, mission first, people always. The "best" answer is usually the most professional and proactive one.
7. Self-Description Inventory
220 Q · 40 min
Affects: Officer Leadership Composite
Personality inventory — answer honestly and consistently. Inconsistent responses are algorithmically flagged. Be authentic.
8. Physical Science
20 Q · 10 min
Affects: Academic Aptitude · CSO
Physics, chemistry, basic biology. Know Newton's laws, Ohm's law, the periodic table basics, and speed of sound/light.
9. Table Reading
40 Q · 7 min
Affects: Pilot · CSO
10 seconds per question — pure speed and accuracy. Practice moving your eyes to the correct row/column intersection under time pressure.
10. Instrument Comprehension
25 Q · 5 min
Affects: Pilot · CSO
Read artificial horizon and compass simultaneously. Practice "level left bank right" orientation. This is trainable with repetition.
11. Block Counting
30 Q · 4.5 min
Affects: Pilot · CSO
Count how many blocks touch a numbered block. Rotate the image mentally. Work in a systematic pattern — top-to-bottom, front-to-back.
12. Aviation Information
20 Q · 8 min
Affects: Pilot · ABM
Study FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge — it's free online. Focus on four forces of flight, flight controls, airport markings, and weather.

AFOQT FAQ

What is the AFOQT?
The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test is a standardized test used by the U.S. Air Force and Space Force to assess candidates for officer commissioning programs. It measures verbal, quantitative, and aviation-related aptitude.
How long does the AFOQT take?
Approximately 3.5 hours of testing time, not counting administrative time. The 12 subtests vary from 4.5 to 40 minutes each.
What is a competitive AFOQT score?
Minimums are Verbal 15 / Quantitative 10, but competitive candidates typically score 50+ on relevant composites. For pilot training, a Pilot composite of 25+ and PCSM of 50+ is generally competitive.
Can I retake the AFOQT?
You may take the AFOQT a maximum of two times total, with a mandatory 180-day wait between attempts. Your most recent score is the one that counts.
What subtests affect the Pilot composite?
Math Knowledge, Table Reading, Instrument Comprehension, and Aviation Information drive the Pilot composite. These four are where your prep time has the highest ROI if you're aiming for rated aviation.
How should I approach the Self-Description Inventory?
Answer honestly and consistently. It is a personality assessment and there are no trick answers. Inconsistent responses are algorithmically detected. Reflect your genuine leadership tendencies.

Physics Study Resources

SAT & ACT Study Resources

Strategic prep for both exams — math, reading, writing, and the test-taking tactics that move the needle.

Heart of Algebra
Linear equations, systems of equations, and inequalities. This is the highest-frequency SAT math domain — drill it until it is automatic.
Passport to Advanced Math
Quadratics, polynomials, rational expressions, and function notation. Factoring and completing the square are non-negotiable skills.
Problem Solving & Data Analysis
Ratios, percentages, unit conversion, and interpreting graphs and tables. These questions reward careful reading over complex computation.
Geometry & Trig
Circle theorems, triangle similarity, SOHCAHTOA, and special right triangles. Know the unit circle for any ACT trig questions.
Reading Strategy
Evidence-based reading with vocabulary in context. Always return to the passage — every correct answer is directly supported by the text.
Writing & Language
Grammar rules, punctuation, and rhetorical effectiveness. Read answer choices aloud — the wrong answers often sound wrong when heard.
